Description

The cellular retinol binding proteins (CRBPs) are an important component of retinoid activity, and involved in the transport and metabolism of retinoids. In humans, three known isoforms exist: CRBP1, CRBP2 and CRBP3. Although the function of the retinol binding proteins are not fully understood, it is thought they assist in the formation of retinyl esters for storage or conversion of retinol to retinoic acid. Cellular retinol-binding protein-1 (CRBP-1, RBP1 or Retinol Binding Protein 1) is involved in the transport of Vitamin A from the liver to the peripheral tissue. CRBP-1 is highly expressed in liver cells.
