Mesenchymal Stem Cell Markers

Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs), also known as Marrow Stromal Cells, are multipotent stem cells found in the stroma of non-hematopoietic bone marrow. They can also be derived from periosteum, fat and skin. In a steady state of cell turnover, or in response to trauma, MSCs are induced to differentiate into a wide array of cells types including osteoblasts, chondrocytes, myocytes, adipocytes, beta-pancreatic islet cells and possibly neuronal cells. Techniques for the isolation and amplification of mesenchymal stem cells in culture are well established and effective – the cells can be maintained in culture for long periods of time without losing their multipotency. Recent research indicates that MSCs are immuno-priveleged, making them ideal candidates for allogenic transplantation therapies. There have already been advances in the use of MSCs to regenerate human tissues including cartilage, tendons, and bone. MSCs also have the ability to take up and incorporate new genetic material, making them ideal for targeted, in vivo regeneration therapies. Novus Biologicals supplies a number of mesenchymal stem cell markers including CD44, CD73, and CD90/Thy-1.  Negative mesenchymal stem cell markers include CD19 and CD45.
