Biotinylation is a post-translational modification (PTM) that involves the attachment of biotin to a protein following translation. Since biotin, also known as vitamin H, is a small molecule with a molecular weight of only 244 Da, biotinylation does not affect the proteins' function. Biotinylation is a highly specific and very rapid reaction. In addition to protein biotinylation as a PTM, biotinylation also occurs on nucleic acid and other macromolecules.
