Background

Prostatic Acid Phosphatase (PAP), a member of the histidine acid phosphatase family, is an enzyme that is a major component of prostatic fluid and secreted by the epithelial cells of the prostate gland (1, 2, 3). It catalyzes the conversion of orthophosphoric monoester to alcohol and orthophosphate (3). It specifically hydrolyzes phosphorylcholine, which is resistant to hydrolysis by all other acid phosphatases (4). In addition, cellular PAP exhibits endogenous protein tyrosine phosphatase (PYP) activity, and this represents the major PYP activity in normal prostate cells (5). PAP can be used as a tumor marker for malignant prostate cancer (6).
