PIK3CG is an important modulator of extracellular signals, and plays a major role in the maintenance of structure and function of epithelia. PIK3CG is also thought to play a role in the regulation of cytotoxicity in NK cells. Reduced PIK3CG expression is correlated to tumour invasiveness and metastasis in colorectal cancers, whilst polymorphisms in the PIK3CG gene have been linked to susceptibility to autism.

Background

The pirin gene encodes a member of the cupin superfamily. The protein is an Fe(II)-containing nuclear protein expressed in all tissues of the body and concentrated within dot-like subnuclear structures. Interactions with nuclear factor I/CCAAT box transcription factor, as well as B cell lymphoma 3-encoded oncoprotein, suggest that the encoded protein may act as a transcriptional cofactor and be involved in the regulation of DNA transcription and replication.
