MUC-1, also known as mucin 1, is a large cell surface mucin glycoprotein involved in cell adhesion and tumor progression. Specifically, MUC-1 is responsible for the formation of protective mucous barriers on epithelial surfaces and plays a role in intracellular signaling. MUC-1 is proteolytically cleaved to form a heterodimeric complex consisting of both an N-terminal alpha subunit and C-terminal beta subunit. The alpha subunit plays a role in cell adhesion whereas the beta subunit has involvement in cell signaling. MUC-1 is expressed on the apical surface of epithelial cells that line the mucosal surfaces of many different tissues. It is found in high abundance in airway passages, breast, uterine, stomach and pancrean tissue. As it is overexpressed in epithelial tumors, MUC-1 is linked to such diseases as breast and ovarian cancer.

  1. I would like to perform a sandwich assay for the determination of MUC1 protein. May you suggest me some antibodies that can be used together? In particular, if possible, I should need antibodies product in mouse or rabbit.
    • Unfortunately we are not aware of a pair of antibodies that have been used in sandwich ELISA in particular. If you are interested in trying two you may find our Innovators Reward Program to be helpful.
