IFN-gamma Antibody (F12) Summary
Monoclonal antibody F12 binds and neutralizes both natural and recombinant human gamma Interferon. Cross reactivity with other cytokines has not been found. Possible applications include the purification of human gamma Interferon and in vitro neutralization. In general, monoclonal antibodies to gamma Interferon are able to inhibit Schwartzman reactions (reviewed by A. Billiau, 1988, Imm. Today, 9, 37-40) and in the mouse system appear to protect NZB mice against spontaneous development of autoimmune disease (Jacob et al., 1987, J. Exp. Med., 166, 798).

The antibody binds and neutralizes both natural and recombinant human gamma Interferon. The specific activity is approximately 5 x 10^3 neutralizing units^1/mg antibody. The antibody is also useful as a detection antibody in ELISA, for immunoprecipitation and immunohistology on frozen sections.
Not yet tested in other species.

Mammalian Interferon gamma is mainly produced by T lymphocytes and NK cells. It is a pleiotropic cytokine involved in the regulation of nearly all phases of immune and inflammatory responses,including the activation, growth and differentiation of T cell, B cells, macrophages, NK cells and other cell types such as endothelial cells and fibroblasts. It has weak antiviral and antiproliferative activity, and poteniates the antiviral and anti tumor effects of IFN alpha / beta (type I interferon). It is upregulated by IL2, FGF basic, EGF and downregulated by vitamin D3 or DMN. Labile at pH 2.
