Background

Bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) is a member of the TGF-beta superfamily. BMP-2 is synthesized as large precursor molecules that are cleaved by proteolytic enzymes. The active form can consist of a dimer of two identical proteins or a heterodimer of two related bone morphogenetic proteins. Chondrocyte proliferation, endochondrial bone formation, longitudinal bone growth, and bone and cartilage repair are all regulated by BMP-2. This protein also induces the maintenance and repair of colonic epithelium, as well as suppresses the synthesis and release of neuronal dopamine. Recombinant human BMP-2 produced in E.coli is a homodimeric, non-glycosylated, polypeptide containing 115 amino acids.

Limitations
