Phenotypic Data:
The donor (caucasian), now deceased, was affected with Alzheimer's disease. Onset of the disease occured at age 45. This diagnosis was updated by the submitter on 3/2009. The skin biopsy was taken ante-mortem from the forearm. Culture was initiated on 8/17/84 using explants of minced skin. The cell morphology is fibroblast-like. Culture was frozen at PDL 5.

Alzheimer's Disease human neural progenitor cells are derived from Alzheimer's disease patient derived induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) lines under a fully defined neural induction condition (Shi, Y. et al, 2012).... The ADhNPCs express typical markers of cortical neural stem and progenitor cells, and spontaneously form neural tube-like rosette structures when plated as a monolayer in culture. Additionally, ADhNPCs are capable of generating a spectrum of cortical projection neurons and astrocytes. The cortical neurons are electrically active and have the ability to form functional synapses and circuits in vitro. In addition, the cortical neurons transplanted into the neonatal rat cortices can project long distances to innervate other regions of cerebral cortex.Cerebral cortical neurons have been implicated in numerous neurological diseases including Alzheimer's disease, autism, epilepsy and stroke. Despite strong interest in these diseases, high quality human in vitro cell models for cortical neurophysiology were not available until now. With ADhNPCs, we provide neuroscience researchers with a high quality in vitro human system to complement their existing studies of cortical development, function and disorders in animal models. Our human iPS cell-derived AD hNPCs provide scientists an affordable and easily accessible platform for building their own human cellular models of Alzheimer's disease in a disease-relevant genetic and tissue context.
