HOG1 is a mitogen-activated protein kinase that is maintained by the HOG pathway, which is a subset of a greater MAPK pathway that functions to regulate the osmotic and, to a lesser extent, heat responses in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. There are several know factors that aid in the inactivation of HOG1 and the HOG pathway, and they include the 2C Ser/Thr phosphatases Ptc1, Ptc2, and Ptc3, as well as the dephosphorylation of Tyr-176 by PTP2 and PTP3. Many of these signaling molecules arise after an adaptation to the osmotic stress, which allows HOG1 to play an important role in many essential functions such as water homeostasis, the adaptation to citric acid stress, and hydrogen peroxide response.
