Thrombosis is the interruption of blood flow by a clot in the blood vessels. Venous Sinus Thrombosis, also known as Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis, occurs when a blood clot forms in the dural venous sinuses, which are the veins that transport the blood out of the brain back to the heart. Venous Sinus Thrombosis is usually caused by meningitis, surgery to the head or neck, blood disorders, or pregnancy. The symptoms of Venous Sinus Thrombosis include blurred vision, headaches, difficulty speaking, seizures, and signs of a stroke. Venous Sinus Thrombosis has a mortality rate of about 8% and survivors have an 88% recovery rate. Venous Sinus Thrombosis is treated with anticoagulants and sometimes Thrombolysis is injected into the clot site to break it down.
