Trigger Thumb is a condition in the thumb that causes pain in the joint. Individuals with Trigger Thumb often repeat the same movements during jobs or hobbies, causing inflammation in the tendon. The tendon usually slides through the tendon sheath, which works to protect the tendon, easily. Individuals with Trigger Thumb experience pain when bending their thumb because the inflamed tendon must squeeze through the tendon sheath. Women are more at risk to develop Trigger Thumb as are individuals with rheumatoid arthritis, gout, and diabetes. Most cases can be resolved without surgery, and common treatment includes resting the affected thumb, wearing a splint, or taking anti-inflammatory pain medications.
