Stage, Small Cell Lung Cancer: Disease Bioinformatics
Lung cancer begins in the lungs and has become the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States for both men and women--claiming more lives than colon, ovarian, prostate, and breast cancer combined. There are two types of lung cancer: small and non-small based on the appearance of the cancer cells on the microscope. Small cell lung cancer accounts for approximately 15% of lung cancers, tends to grow and spread quickly, and is frequently located in various parts of the body before it is found. Risk for being diagnosed with lung cancer includes smoking, second hand smoke, exposure to radon gas, asbestos, and other chemicals, excessive alcohol use, and a family history. Treatments depend on the stage as well as type of lung cancer but include: surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, targeted drug therapy, and clinical trials. There are two forms of small cell lung cancer: limited and extensive. Differences between these stages account for variations in treatments.
