Lung cancer begins in the lungs and has become the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States for both men and women--claiming more lives than colon, ovarian, prostate, and breast cancer combined. There are two types of lung cancer: small and non-small based on the appearance of the cancer cells on the microscope. Non-small cell lung cancer accounts for approximately 85% of lung cancers and include squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and large cell carcinoma. Risk for being diagnosed with lung cancer includes smoking, second hand smoke, exposure to radon gas, asbestos, and other chemicals, excessive alcohol use, and a family history. Treatments depend on the stage as well as type of lung cancer but include: surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, targeted drug therapy, and clinical trials. Stage III can be divided into IIIA and IIIB. Stage IIIA is divided into three sections depending on the size and location of the tumor, as well as if the lymph nodes are infected with cancer. One scenario that would warrant a IIIA diagnosis is if the cancer spreads to lymph nodes on the same side of the tumor as well as to the chest bone or the bronchus. One or more tumors may be present at any size in the same lobe of the lung. Pneumonitis may be present. Another scenario would be if cancer has spread to the lymph nodes on the same side of the tumor and is near the bronchus. The tumor may be any size, the lung may develop pneumonitis, and it may have spread to various locations around the chest cavity. The third scenario is the cancer has not spread to the lymph nodes but has spread to location such as the heart, trachea, esophagus, carina, backbone, or major blood vessels that lead to and from the heart.
