Stage Ii Vaginal Cancer: Disease Bioinformatics
Vaginal cancer is a very rare cancer that occurs in the cells that line the muscular tube that connects the uterus to the outer genitals, frequently called the birth canal. Increased risk for vaginal cancer occurs with increasing age, smoking, HIV infection, multiple sexual partners, early age of first intercourse, the presence of atypical cells in the vagina called vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia, and exposure to the drug diethylstilbestrol (DES). There are four different types of vaginal cancer that are differentiated based on where the cancer begins: vaginal squamous cell carcinoma, vaginal adenocarcinoma, vaginal melanoma, and vaginal sarcoma. Treatments for vaginal cancer include: removal of tumors and lesions, vaginectomy, pelvic exenteration, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and clinical trials. In stage II of vaginal cancer, the cancer has spread to the connective tissues next to the vagina but has not gone beyond this point--the pelvis (including rectum, bladder, large intestine, and reproductive organs), the lymph nodes, and distant sites have not been affected.
