Stage, Esophageal Cancer: Disease Bioinformatics

Esophageal cancers typically begin in the bottom portion of the esophagus, and affect more men than women. The cancer is typically diagnosed at a late stage, so it has a relatively poor prognosis. There are two types of esophageal cancer: squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Risk factors include: older age, poor diet, drinking alcohol, obesity, gastroesophageal reflux disease, smoking, chewing tobacco, and radiation treatment to the chest or upper abdomen. It is not a very common cancer in the United States, but it has higher incidence rates in places like Asia and Africa. Treatments include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and clinical trials. There are four different stages of esophageal cancer. Treatment varies according to the stage as the stage represents the progression of the cancer.
