Stage 0 Gallbladder Cancer: Disease Bioinformatics

Gallbladder cancer is a rare adenocarcinoma cancer that begins typically in the glandular cells that line the inner surface of the gallbladder, and if found in the early stages, has a good prognosis, yet it is difficult to detect early because it does not have any specific signs or symptoms. It is unclear what causes gallbladder cancer but cancer develops when healthy cells undergo mutations in their DNA, allowing uncontrolled cell growth in the gallbladder. Gallbladder cancer is more common in women, with risk increasing in age and with individuals who have gallstones. Treatments include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. In stage 0 gallbladder cancer, commonly called carcinoma in situ, the cancer cells are only located in the tissue lining of the gallbladder. There is few if any symptoms at this stage and little risk of cancer having spread this early.
