Stemming from Rheumatic Fever, Rheumatic Disease of the Mitral Valve is a chronic heart condition. Rheumatic Fever is a disease that develops from an infection with A Streptococcus bacteria in which these bacteria begin as strep throat or scarlet fever and evolve into Rheumatic Fever if they are not treated. Most common in children between the ages of 5 to 15, Rheumatic Disease of the Mitral Valve is caused by the improper treatment or recurrence of Rheumatic Fever. The mitral valve is a valve in the heart that separates the left atrium from the left ventricle and prevents blood from returning to the atrium. The mitral valve is damaged by Rheumatic Disease because it causes the valve’s leaflets to thicken or it causes scarring of the leaflets. Rheumatic Disease of the Mitral Valve is treated with surgery to repair or replace the heart valves. Because of the common occurrence in developing countries, many children die of Rheumatic Disease of the Mitral Valve each year.
