Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, often called silent liver disease, is a disease that resembles alcoholic hepatitis, but occurs in people who drink little to no alcohol. In Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis there is fat in the liver along with inflammation and damage. Most people with nonalcoholic hepatitis feel well and are unaware of liver problem they have, but nonalcoholic steatohepatitis can lead to cirrhosis, leaving the liver permanently damaged. The underlying causes of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis are unclear, but it most often occurs in middle-aged people who are overweight or obese. Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis can happen in anyone though. There are currently no specific treatments for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis but there are ways to try to prevent the disease such as, maintaining a healthy and balanced diet, avoiding alcohol, and reducing weight (if necessary).
