Narcotic Dependence: Disease Bioinformatics

Narcotics are drugs that help relieve pain and are widely used because of how effective they are. Narcotics are generally administered orally or injected into veins. However one of the problems with narcotics they not only reduce sensitivity to pain, they also stimulate our brains pleasure center and create an intense feeling of an extreme happiness or a high. Their strong effect is one of the reasons why countless individuals abuse narcotic drugs. Narcotics that are prescribed by doctors and those purchased illegally have similar effects. The only difference is that the use of narcotics in hospital settings is controlled, which minimizes the potential for abuse. Narcotics that are administered in hospital settings are given under doctor supervision insuring the patient isn’t harmed by the drugs. Narcotics that are purchased illegally are generally smoked, injected, or snorted. And are not controlled which can lead to narcotic dependence and major health problems. Morphine, methadone, cocaine, crack, and heroin are examples of narcotics. Narcotic dependence does not take long to develop, and this dependence is often both physical and mental. Those who suffer from intense pain may feel like they need to take narcotics regularly in order to live life normally. In this case, the narcotic will fill both a physical and psychological need. Individuals who are addicted to narcotics, such as heroin and crystal meth, generally start consuming the drug to escape from problems that maybe occurring in their lives and they ultimately discover that they enjoy the physical effects that the drug induces. As with most drugs, the more a person takes narcotics, the higher their tolerance level becomes and the more they will have to take to get the same feeling. This can be quite dangerous because narcotics are so addictive. Therefore, individuals who become addicted to them will increase their doses as their tolerance builds. A person’s tolerance for narcotics will continue to increase as long as the individual takes the drug, which is why overdosing on narcotics is very common.
