Metastatic Penile Cancer: Disease Bioinformatics

Penile cancer begins in the penis and includes various types such as: basal cell penile cancer, melanoma, sarcoma, and epidermoid/squamous cell carcinoma. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common form of penile cancer. Penile cancer is a relatively uncommon cancer as it only accounts for 10% of all male cancers. Risk factors for developing penile cancer include exposure and infection from the human papillomavirus (HPV), age, smoking, phimosis, an HIV/Aids infection, and poor personal hygiene. Treatment for penile cancer includes surgery, laser therapy, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and supportive/palliative care. Metastatic penile cancer occurs when the cancer has spread to various locations in the body. When this occurs, the cancer generally becomes incurable--treatments tend to focus on alleviating pain and symptoms rather than attacking the cancer itself.
