Meningitis causes inflammation of the meninges which is the protective membranes surrounding the in the brain and spinal cord. The inflammation is caused by an infection in the fluid surrounding the brain or spinal. Cryptococcal Meningitis is caused when the spores of Cryptococcus neoformans are inhaled. Unlike other kinds of meningitis, Cryptococcal Meningitis come on slowly taking a few weeks. The symptoms of this fungal meningitis include fever, hallucinations, and headache. Cryptococcal Meningitis can be treated with antifungal medications such as Intravenous therapy with amphotericin B. People with AIDS, Lymphoma, Leukemia, and diabetes are more at risk for Cryptococcal Meningitis.
