Chronic hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that lasts for 6 months or more. This illness may be mild, causing little damage to the liver, or more serious, causing many liver cells to be destroyed. Cirrhosis and liver failure are also possible. People with hepatitis C have the greatest risk of developing chronic hepatitis but viruses are the most common cause for chronic hepatitis.
