Digestive System Disorders: Disease Bioinformatics
Digestive System Disorders include heartburn, inflammatory bowel disease, and irritable bowel syndrome. Heartburn, or Acid Indigestion, is when stomach contents enter the esophagus and cause a burning in the chest and throat. Acid Indigestion can be treated with diet change, weight loss, and over the counter medication. Doctors can also prescribe medications that reduce the amount of stomach acid which are stronger than the over the counter medications. Inflammatory bowel disease is when parts of the digestive tract are attacked by the body’s immune system. The symptoms include abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and fever, and the two main types of inflammatory bowel disease are Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Irritable bowel syndrome is when the nerves in the intestines become more active and contract more often. The symptoms include abdominal pain, cramping, and fullness. All of these are considered Digestive System Disorders.
