Paranasal sinus cancer is cancer that occurs in the paranasal sinuses which are hollow spaces in the bones that surround the nose. The maxillary sinuses are a subset of the paranasal sinuses and are the location of the most common region of paranasal cancer. The maxillary sinuses are commonly referred to as the sinuses, or cavities, underneath the cheeks on either side of the nose. Cancer of this area typically includes melanoma, sarcoma, midline granulomas, and inverting papilloma. Risk for developing paranasal sinus cancer includes smoking, being male, being infected with the human papillomavirus (HPV), and chemical exposure in workplaces of those like flour mills, shoemakers, metal-platers, carpenters, and furniture makers. Standard treatments include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. In stage IVB, the cancer has spread to the brain, the back of the eye, the base of the skull, the middle of the brain, or throat behind the nose.
