Brain Thrombus: Disease Bioinformatics
A brain thrombus is a stationary blood clot that blocks the passage of blood through the arteries of the brain. A thrombus in the brain is called a brain thrombosis, which is the most common type of stroke. The lack of blood flow and oxygen can severely affect the brain, as neurons die off in a matter of minutes without oxygen. People who are prone to blood clots are at a high risk for this disorder, along with smokers and those who have high cholesterol. Symptoms of a brain thrombosis depend on the location of the blood clot in the brain, but they most commonly include confusion, motor skill impairment, and weakness. Treatments for a brain thrombus include anticoagulants to reduce blood clotting, blood pressure monitoring, and if the blockage is very severe surgery may be required to restore adequate blood flow.
