Brain Thrombosis: Disease Bioinformatics

A brain thrombosis occurs when a blood clot blocks the passage of blood through the arteries of the brain. Brain thrombosis is the most common type of stroke. The lack of blood flow and oxygen can severely affect the brain, as neurons die off in a matter of minutes without oxygen. A specific type of brain thrombosis is cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, in which blood is not able to drain from the brain and the intracranial pressure rises significantly. People who are prone to blood clots are at a high risk for this disorder, along with smokers and those who have high cholesterol. Symptoms of a brain thrombosis depend on the location of the blood clot in the brain, but they most commonly include confusion, motor skill impairment, and weakness. Treatments for a brain thrombosis include anticoagulants to reduce blood clotting, blood pressure monitoring, and if the blockage is very severe surgery may be required to restore adequate blood flow.
