Brain Stem Hemangioblastoma: Disease Bioinformatics

A brain stem hemangioblastoma is a rare type of tumor located in the brain stem that is derived from blood cells or cells that are precursors to blood vessels, which results in the tumor being vascular and having a high risk of bleeding. Hemangioblastomas have been known to be associated with the autosomal dominant von Hippel-Lindau disease as well as polycythemia and pancreatic cysts. Symptoms of a brain stem hemangioblastoma include numbness, headaches, and nausea. The tumor is usually benign and slow growing, but due to the location near the brain stem, surgery is still a very risky procedure to remove the hemangioblastoma.
