Brain Developmental Abnormality: Disease Bioinformatics
A developmental brain abnormality can occur in the brain of a fetus shortly after conception. This is a very common disorder, affecting approximately 1% of all newborns. Factors that affect the development of the brain include hypoxia, low pH levels, fetal stress, and the introduction of toxins via drugs or alcohol. These brain defects may also be genetic, as there are a multitude of genes which affect the growth of the brain in a fetus. Disturbances in early fetal development may result in altered forebrain formation, while those that occur later in development may affect more specific brain regions, such as the frontal lobe or the cerebellum. Because there can be such a variety of issues associated with developmental brain abnormalities, the treatment of each disorder is decided on an individual basis, yet many patients will live with some kind of mental illness for the duration of their life.
