Botulism: Disease Bioinformatics

Botulism, caused by a nerve toxin, is a very rare but serious condition that causes paralysis. The nerve toxin is caused by Clostridium botulinum which is a type of bacteria that can be found in the soil and low-oxygenated areas. There are three common types of botulism. Occurring in about 15% of cases, Foodborne botulism is caused by botulinum toxin contaminated foods. Occurring about 20% of the time, Wound botulism is caused when a wound is infected with the bacteria and then the toxin is produced. Infant botulism, occurring 65% of the time, is caused when the infant consumes the bacteria which then grows in their intestines and releases the toxin. Symptoms of botulism include muscle weakness, dry mouth, and double vision. Botulism is treated with antitoxins and antibiotics, and the death rate due to botulism has dropped from 50% to 3-5% in the last 50 years.
