Arterial Thrombosis is the interruption of blood flow by a clot, or thrombus, in the arteries. If the thrombus, or clot, breaks off, it enters the blood circulation as an embolus. An Arterial Thrombosis causes a blockage at the origin site of the thrombus. Once the embolus has entered the blood stream it follows the blood vessels until it becomes lodged in an artery causing an Arterial Embolism. Symptoms of an Arterial Embolism vary based on the location of the blockage. Some symptoms include chest pain, decreased pulse in the extremities, and numbness in the affected areas. Symptoms of Arterial Thrombosis include varicose veins, swelling in the extremities, and isolated pain. Both Arterial Thrombosis and Arterial Embolisms can be treated with anti-clotting medications, enzymes that brake down the clot, and catheters to expand the affected vein.
