Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a neurological disease that is the most common cause of dementia. The connections between the brain cells degenerate and eventually die due to a generation of plaques and tangles in and between the cells. One version of the disease, known as AD without Neurofibrillary Tangles, leads to only the formation of plaques in between the neurons, which causes a later disease onset and shorter duration. The disease leads to memory loss, and in the later stages, an inability to perform daily activities. Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease, and the symptoms of the patient worsen over time as the brain is more widely affected. It is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. There is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s, but there exist treatments for symptoms as well as a multitude of ongoing research projects.
