Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia is a subtype of Acute Myelogenous Leukemia where there is an accumulation of promyelocytes. This disease is characterized by a chromosomal translocation involving the retinoic acid receptor alpha gene making this subtype unique. Because of the translocation Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia is highly responsive to all trans retinoic acid therapy.
