Alpha-synuclein is a synuclein protein that is detectable as a soluble monomer which can form filamentous aggregates.This protein may be involved in the regulation of dopamine release and transport. It has also been found to interact with tubulin, and may have an activity as potential microtubule-associated protein like tau. Recent studies have shown that alpha Synuclein may act as a molecular chaperone during SNARE complex formation, indicating that alpha-Synuclein may also be involved in vesicle trafficking by the neuronal Golgi apparatus.
Alpha-synuclein is an important neural protien, accounting for up to 1% of all proteins in the cytosol. It is predominantly expressed in the hippocampus, neocortex, substantia nigra, thalamus, and cerebellum, but can also be found in glial cells. Genetic alterations of alpha Synuclein causing aberrant polymerization into fibrils, are associated with several neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson's and dementia Lewy body.
