The KRTAP5-3 gene encodes a 238 amino acid long, 22 kDA keratin-associated protein 5-3 that participates in the hair cortex, working towards the creation of a rigid and resistant hair shaft. This gene is able to do so through disulfide bond cross-linking with various cysteine residues of hair keratins.
