Vision

As humans we rely on the visual system as the primary means of gathering information about the world around us. The World Health Organization estimates that three quarters of cases of blindness are either preventable or treatable. Cases of blindness due to infections have steadily declined due to public health efforts, however blindness that is age related or due to chronic diseases such as diabetes have seen a steady increase in recent years. The visual system allows organisms to perceive light and transmit it via neuronal signals to the visual cortex of the brain. The lens focuses light onto photoreceptive cells of the retina, which convert light patterns into electrical signals. These signals are then transmitted to brain.
