Oligodendrocyte Cell Markers
Oligodendrocytes provide support to axons and produce insulating myelin sheaths. The CNS depends on this insulation to reduce ion leakage in order to increase overall nerve conduction speed. When myelin sheaths are degenerated oligodendrocytes attempt to replace them, however, in multiple sclerosis patients oligodendrocytes themselves are destroyed thus compromising their ability to perform repairs.
