Nutrient Sensing in the Brain

Increased availability of nutrients is tightly coupled with nutrient-sensing mechanisms that in turn activate appropriate behavioral and metabolic responses. Metabolic responses include a decrease in food intake, the production of endogenous nutrients as well as an increase in energy expenditure. Nutrient availability is sensed at central sites (mostly in the hypothalamus) and in peripheral tissues, such as fat and skeletal muscle. The hypothalamus links the sensing of nutrients to the control of metabolism and feeding behavior.
