Cholesterol Metabolism
Cholesterol is an essential molecule for plasma membrane integrity, fat digestion and the production of steroid hormones. Although cholesterol can be obtained from the diet and synthesized in bodily tissues, high dietary intake of cholesterol suppresses synthesis in the liver (but not in other tissues). Since cholesterol cannot be degraded, it has no significant role in energy metabolism. Cholesterol is transported in the bloodstream by lipoproteins due to its hydrophobicity. Several membrane proteins are involved in the genetic regulation of cholesterol synthesis, including SREBP, SCAP, S1P and S2P.
