Infectious diseases caused by viruses, bacteria and parasites account for roughly 25% of deaths worldwide according to the World Health Organization. Viruses are pieces of nucleic acid (RNA or DNA) wrapped in a thin coat of protein that can only replicate in the cells of living hosts. Subviral particles, such as viroids and prions, are infectious agents smaller than viruses. Bacteria are unicellular, microorganisms that display a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Their interactions with other organisms can take the form of predation, mutualism or parasitism. Parasites live in or on a host to obtain nutrients without providing any benefit to the host.
