Chemokines are small proteins involved in the inflammatory response. They are a type of cytokine that attract leukocytes to infection sites by acting as chemoattractants. Cytokines interact with the targeted leukocytes via GPCRs, which causes a change in the leukocyte's adhesive properties thus allowing movement from the bloodstream into the tissue along a chemokine gradient. Chemokines are classified into two major subfamilies divided on the basis of their pairs of cysteine residues. CC chemokines contain adjacent cysteine residues, whereas CXC chemokines cysteines are separated by a different amino acid.
