Melanoma Cell Markers

Melanoma is a malignant tumor that results from uncontrolled growth of pigmented cells, called melanocytes. Several types of melanoma exist, including superficial spreading melanoma, nodular melanoma and lentigo melanoma. Melanoma diagnosis is traditionally supported by the presence of the S-100 protein marker and HMB-45, however research has determined the sensitivity and specificity of three novel antibodies as markers for melanoma: Mitf, Melan-A and tyrosinase.
