Extracellular Matrix
The extracellular matrix (ECM) provides structural support for cells and has many diverse functions. The composition of the ECM is diverse thus allowing it to provide support, segregate various tissues, regulate communication between cells and regulate cellular behavior. The composition of the matrix is determined by the excretion of resident cells; common molecules include fibrous proteins and glycosaminoglycans.
