Model Organisms

Model organisms are non-human species that serve as useful proxies in which to study homologous human diseases, pathways or other biological mechanisms. Because it is rarely practical for researchers to perform experiments on human subjects, model organisms are selected due to any number of favorable characteristics, such as organism size, lifespan, generational cycle, fecundity rate, genome size, cost of maintenance, homology to humans, etc.
