Spotlight on ATG5
ATG5 is known to modulate T-cell survival and therefore plays an important role in Multiple Sclerosis, where T-cells mediate demylenation. (Alirezaei M, et al. Autophagy 2009, 5(2): 152-58) Furthermore, as many as 699 genes are differentially expressed in ATG5 sufficient versus deficient thymocytes.  (Stephenson LM, et al. Autophagy 2009, 5(5):625-35)  Given these findings, ATG5’s role in basic Neuroscience and Autoimmune research is rapidly expanding.
