ABCG1 Products
ATP-binding cassette sub-family G member 1 (ABCG1) is a member of the superfamily of ATP-binding cassette transporters and a member of the White subfamily.
ABCG1 is expressed on the cell surface and in intracellular compartments of cholesterol-laden macrophages. ABCG-1 is involved in macrophage cholesterol and phospholipid transport, and may also regulate cellular lipid homeostasis in other cell types. ABCG1 is induced in monocyte-derived macrophages during cholesterol influx mediated by acetylated low-density lipoprotein. In contrast, lipid efflux in cholesterol-laden macrophages, mediated by the cholesterol acceptor HDL(3), suppresses the expression of ABCG1. In general, ATP-binding cassette transporter genes (ABC transporters) are involved in the regulation of the amount of dietary cholesterol retained in the body.
