CD44 is a single-pass type 1 membrane glycoprotein. CD44 acts as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA). Adhesion with HA plays an important role in areas such as tumor growth and progression, lymphocyte activation, recirculation and in hematopoiesis. CD44 also interacts with collagen, laminin and fibronectin. At least 17 isoforms of CD44 have been identified arising from alternate splicing.
